AB 1572 is a California law aimed at conserving water and promoting sustainable landscaping by banning the irrigation of nonfunctional turf on CII properties, as well as common areas managed by HOAs and similar entities.
The ban applies to irrigating with potable water, which is water that is safe and suitable for human consumption, such as drinking water supplied through public water systems, like ACWD. The law will be phased in starting January 1st, 2027.

Nonfunctional Turf (NFT): Grass that serves no active purpose, such as recreation or community gatherings. Examples include turf in parking lot medians, decorative strips along streets, and other areas not used for activities.
Functional Turf (FT): Grass located in areas designed for recreation or public gatherings, such as sports fields, playgrounds, or event spaces. Turf that is inaccessible or unused for these purposes is not functional.
Most turf at CII properties is considered non-functional.
